Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project

What It Is

The Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project's Local Food Campaign celebrates fresh, locally produced food grown by our farming neighbors on their family farms throughout Western North Carolina and the southern Appalachians.

Locally grown and raised foods allow you to:

Local Food Guide

  • Eat fresher, better tasting, and healthier foods.
  • Help your farming neighbors stay in business and preserve the family values of rural communities.
  • Protect the natural beauty of these mountains by preserving farmland.
  • Encourage sustainable agriculture to keep your farming neighbors farming and your plant and animal neighbors alive in good health.
  • Strengthen the local economy by supporting local, family farmers with your hard earned food dollars and by keeping the mountains beautiful so that visitors will come and support your businesses.

Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project is now formalizing the participation of growers, area restaurants, grocery stores, caterers, and tailgate markets in the campaign.

What You Can Do

Visit the Local Food Guide and find participating grocery stores and restaurants, tailgate markets, CSAs, and businesses that buy local.

Look for the Appalachian Grown label, a symbol displayed with farm products grown or raised in Western North Carolina and the southern Appalachian mountains.

Ask restaurants where they get the food they serve and grocery stores where they get their produce. If it wasn't grown locally, let them know you value freshness, good taste and local family farms.
